“I call on the American people to assemble on that day in their respective places of worship, there to pay homage to the memory of President James Earl Carter, Jr,” Biden said in a White House proclamation. “I invite the people of the world who share our grief to join us in this solemn observance.”

US stock market will be closed January 9 

After announcement from the Washington DC, different agency is an authorities has started to react on the decision and making easier to the citizens to corporate with the state on 9 January for National Day of mourning for Jimmy Carter. 

The New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and Nasdaq have informed that they will close on January 9th as a mark of respect for former President Jimmy Carter. This closure will coincide with the National Day of Mourning declared in honor of his passing. This decision follows the established tradition of US stock markets closing upon the death of a former president, as seen previously with the passing of President George H.W. Bush. 

The closure will impact all stock and options markets operated by the NYSE. Similarly, Nasdaq will also remain closed on that day. The financial industry group, SIFMA, has recommended an early market close at 2 p.m. ET for all fixed-income cash markets on January 9th. This recommendation applies to US government bond markets and corporate bond trading. Both the NYSE and Nasdaq observed a moment of silence earlier today to honor President Carter’s legacy of public service and humanitarianism.
